Somaliland Is Betraying Its Own Blood
Israel recognition of Somaliland, announced December 26, 2025, was celebrated in Hargeisa as a historic breakthrough. It was nothing of the sort. It was a calculated military transaction — Israel securing a Red Sea foothold opposite Yemen, Somaliland surrendering its moral credibility for a single ally no Arab, African, or Muslim-majority nation will follow. A people who survived the Isaaq genocide, who built democracy from ruin, have now aligned with the very logic their founders bled to resist. The martyrs of the Valley of Death deserved far better.
Somali Airlines
Somali Airlines is set to resume operations after three decades with two newly acquired Airbus A320 aircraft through a rent-to-buy arrangement. The revival represents a significant milestone in Somalia's rebuilding efforts under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's leadership. While the airline promises economic benefits and diaspora connectivity, critics question the investment's timing given ongoing humanitarian challenges. The government plans operations within two months, though concerns remain about the undisclosed financial terms and operator background amid the country's famine conditions.
Somaliland Democracy
Somaliland democracy has been recognised with a prestigious international award for electoral integrity, professionalism, and excellence. The honour, presented in Gaborone, Botswana, places Somaliland alongside Africa’s strongest democracies, reinforcing its reputation as a beacon of stability in the Horn of Africa. While the award is a proud moment, it also underscores the paradox of Somaliland’s unrecognised status. For its leaders and citizens, democracy remains both a means and an end — vital for peace, development, and legitimacy.
Edna Adan of Somaliland makes history as the first African woman to win the 2023 Templeton Prize, a prestigious honour previously received by world-renowned figures like Desmond Tutu, Dalai Lama, and Mother Teresa. Her significant contributions to healthcare have made a profound societal impact.
Liverpool Bid for Isak
Liverpool’s pursuit of Alexander Isak has reignited, with the Reds preparing a Liverpool bid for Isak. After an initial offer was rebuffed by Newcastle United, Liverpool are now planning a more lucrative package, combining an attractive upfront fee with performance-based add-ons. Isak, resolute in his desire to leave St James’ Park, remains uninterested in contract renewal. Jurgen Klopp views the Swedish striker as the perfect complement to Darwin Núñez and Luis Díaz, believing his pace and finishing will elevate Liverpool’s attacking prowess next season dramatically.
Record Climate
Climate observations are breaking records worldwide. Early data show January 2025 was the warmest January ever on record. At the same time, an early wildfire season has ignited across North America and the UK as unusually warm weather settles in. Scientists note that 2024 saw the fastest rise in atmospheric CO₂ concentrations in decades, surpassing previous annual gains. Taken together, these trends – new heat records and soaring greenhouse gases – reinforce the urgent call for accelerated climate action by governments and industry.
