Bayern Munich defeats PSG
Bayern Munich defeated Paris St-Germain 1-0 in their last-16 first-leg tie, thanks to Kingsley Coman’s winner early in the second half, repeating his 2020 Champions League final heroics. Coman also scored the only goal in the final when Bayern beat PSG to win the trophy three years ago. Substitute Kylian Mbappe, who was back after injury, appeared to have rescued a draw for the hosts, but his late effort was ruled out for offside in the build-up.
PSG, the Ligue 1 champions, have now lost their last three matches in all competitions. In contrast, Bayern are unbeaten in all competitions since 17 September and are now favorites to reach the quarter-finals, despite having defender Benjamin Pavard sent off for a second booking in injury time. Before the match, PSG was boosted by the news that Lionel Messi was fit enough to start up front after recovering from a hamstring injury, while Mbappe was on the bench.
Bayern dominated possession but lacked a cutting edge in the first half, while PSG struggled to create any chances of note. Warren Zaire-Emery, who became the youngest player ever to start a Champions League knockout stage game at 16 years and 343 days, was given a start in midfield. Mbappe, who was expected to miss the match with a thigh injury, was brought on after 57 minutes but was clearly far from full fitness.
Coman’s winner in the 53rd minute came from a first-time volley that squeezed under PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma after he met a deep Alphonso Davies cross from the left. Coman’s effort was followed by superb saves from Donnarumma to deny Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting and Pavard. Mbappe’s arrival lifted PSG and Yann Sommer kept out his close-range shot before the Bayern keeper was beaten in the 82nd minute. However, the home celebrations were cut short as left-back Nuno Mendes was ruled narrowly offside by the video assistant referee (VAR) before he delivered a cross for Mbappe to finish into the roof of the net.
Press at PSG
After losing to Marseille in the Coupe de France and Monaco in Ligue 1, another damaging defeat piles the pressure on PSG’s manager, Christophe Galtier. PSG, who have never won the Champions League, now face a challenging task in the return leg in Germany on 8 March. Bayern is now the favorite to progress to the quarter-finals, while PSG will need to find their winning form to keep their hopes of winning the Champions League alive.
