Breaking Barriers: Hamida Dakane’s Historic Election in North Dakota

An Inspiring Journey to Public Service

Hamida Dakane recently made history as the first woman of Somali descent to join the House of Representatives in North Dakota. Born in Somalia, Dakane moved from Kenya to North Dakota in 2012 to attend North Dakota State University through the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program. She later earned a master’s degree in public administration at the University of Mary in Bismarck. Dakane’s passion for giving back to her community led her to pursue a career in politics, and despite unsuccessful campaigns in 2020 and 2021, she remained undeterred.

A Landmark Election Victory

In November 2022, Dakane ran as a Democrat to represent District 10 in the North Dakota House of Representatives. She was ultimately elected after receiving 31.8% of valid votes. During her campaign, Dakane focused on key issues such as affordable housing, childcare, and better school programs. She expressed her desire to bring a spirit of cooperation to her position as a representative, emphasizing the importance of working together to build healthy communities.

Community Involvement and Recognition

Dakane has received numerous accolades, including the YCWA Woman of the Year Award and the Fargo Human Rights Award. In addition to her work as a legislator, she serves as a Community Organizer for AmeriCorps VISTA, focusing on developing resilient communities through local volunteer programs. In 2014, she co-founded the Afro-American Development Association, a Moorhead-based non-profit that provides resources and tools to support new Americans.
