Pivotal year of worldwide elections — 2024 is the year of elections. There has been no year like it throughout history, with almost half the worlds population casting votes at the ballot box. 64 countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Russia, India, Pakistan, and Indonesia will elect representatives who will hold the keys to power. With crucial issues like climate change, AI, and a financial system on the brink, the 2024 elections will be decisive on how the world will carve a path to solve them.

The US elections are perhaps the most important for the future of climate change. The political re-match between Biden and Trump offers markedly different attitudes towards global warming. Donald Trump is a famous climate denier and while in office rolled back regulation that placed limitations on the opening of new coal stations. He was recently quoted during the Iowa caucuses as saying, “We are going to drill, baby, drill”, clearly unchanged on his stance he held while in power.
Biden on the other hand has long been an advocate for greener energy. His recent Inflation Reduction Act has poured millions of pounds into green energy through incentivised grants and loans, encouraging businesses to adopt better climate practices. With more than $200 billion dollars being invested into clean energy through investors, it looks to be having a positive effect on changing attitudes.
Critics argue he is not doing enough to reduce emissions. This year has seen record oil and gas production from the worlds superpower with no tabled policies looking to reduce the United States reliance on fossil fuels. Under Bidens administration there has been an increase in new oil and gas wells, even more than those approved by Donald Trump during his time in office.

Liz Truss’ short calamitous time as Prime Minister sent a shockwave through the UK’s financial markets. Along with the financial ramifications of Brexit, the UK has been struggling to quell the flames of inflation and its impact on the cost of living. The Conservative led government has been in
power for 14 years and with years of under investment and stagnating growth, this election year couldn’t have come at a more pivotal time to decide the UK’s future course. Political commentators are predicting a Labour landslide with many voters yearning for change, tired of the status quo.
Labour however have been coy in releasing details of its plan if elected to power. The Labour leader Keir Starmer has one of the lowest popularity ratings of any incumbent leader and has the huge uphill task of overturning the biggest swing from one party to another in UK history.
Pivotal year of worldwide elections — Russian Election
In late 2022 the world had its first taste of the AI revolution. ChatGPT was openly released onto the internet and quickly started to spread through every aspect of society. One of the big fears around AI is its potential use as a tool of faking information to help win elections. The rise of deep fakes has meant that there is a real possibility of being unable to trust if a video of a politician is real or fake.
Russia has a chequered past with election integrity and following Vladmir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine, there will be even more emphasis on controlling the narrative. It could be the first election where AI deep fakes influences the way people vote. Putin is not adverse from using underhand tactics to make sure his power is enforced, and this may just be the first time it is used by a government.
Indian Election
The Indian election is as pivotal as any, but for different reasons. Prime Minister Modi is seeking his third term in office and if elected, it could be a time where India becomes a true religious state. Modi has overseen tough measures against Sikhs, with even the Canadian becoming involved after accusing the Indian government of conspiring to murder a Sikh Canadian national. Modi has his roots in the RRS, a Hindu supremacist group that aims for a Hindu state under Hindu rule. If Modi wins the next election, it will be a worrying time for people in India of different faiths.
Pakistan Election
Pakistan’s election will be like no other. A military coup against Imran Khan has sent the country into turmoil. In previous years a carnival like atmosphere would grip the country ahead of national elections. This year however the mood could not be different. Reports of vote rigging, and no real opposition has led to a subdued atmosphere. The former leader Imran Khan lies in jail and after a vote of no confidence is no longer able to run for office.
Indonesian Election
In Indonesia democracy itself is under pressure. Strongman Prabowo Subianto is rekindling the embers of the days when the country was under a dictatorship. In fact, it was under his father in law’s rule when this last happened. It was Subianto’s intention to succeed him and reportedly instigated the kidnappings of pro-democracy supporters to achieve it. He has since taken on a different guise but his popularity will sure be worrying to those who value democracy.
It is unclear which way these elections will go, but what is clear is that the world is teetering on a knife edge. The worlds future lies within these elections and the wildly different polices on offer could lead it any direction.
