National ID Cards
Somalia Introduces National ID Cards – After more than three decades of waiting, Somalia is set to introduce national identification (ID) cards, a move that is expected to restore order and stability to the country. The country’s civil registry collapsed in 1991 after the ouster of Siad Barre, leading to a state of disorder and confusion that has systematically degenerated into chronic instability. However, the Senate has recently passed a legislation that will end the state of uncertainty and bring order to the country.
The introduction of national ID cards will put an end to the long-standing absence of a functional civil registry system, and offer hope to millions of Somalis who have been left without identification papers for years. This has caused major inconveniences to them, including the inability to access financial services, healthcare, and education. Additionally, Al-Shabaab militants have been impersonating security officers while launching attacks across the country due to the lack of basic identification processes.
The national ID card system is expected to help reduce the number of cases of insecurity by identifying individuals, particularly those who are involved in illegal activities or terrorism. It will also assist the government to track down and prevent fraudulent activities, which have been a significant problem in Somalia. According to the Minister of Internal Security, Hassan Hundubey, the cards will have various security features such as biometric data, a personal identification number (PIN), and other unique identifiers.
Somalia Introduces National ID Cards – Registration of all Somalis
Speaking on the significance of the ID card system, Abdiweli Sheikh Fiqi, the Deputy Director-General of the National Intelligence and Security Agency, stated that the registration of all Somalis would reduce cases of insecurity, as it would help the government in the fight against illegal immigration, human trafficking, and organized crime. The ID cards will also enable the government to provide better services to citizens, including healthcare, education, and voting.
The introduction of national ID cards marks a significant milestone for Somalia, as it will enable the government to have a database of its citizens for the first time in decades. This will not only promote security and stability in the country but also enhance the delivery of services and spur economic growth. The government has indicated that it plans to launch the national ID card system in the coming months and has urged all Somalis to register for the cards.
In conclusion, the introduction of national ID cards in Somalia is a crucial step towards rebuilding a functional civil registry system and promoting stability in the country. The government has assured its citizens that the cards will be safe, secure, and accessible to all, and has urged them to embrace this new initiative. The successful implementation of the system will be a significant achievement for Somalia and a testament to the resilience of its people.
